Plumping and Nesting

I’m not going to deny it… I’m probably obsessed with Design*Sponge more than ever because of this damn “Nesting” desease I’ve got.  With Baby on the way, all I can think about is how filthy the house is, how I need some of that Fabreeze washing spray stuff because everything stinks, and all the THINGS I need to create my cozy home.  It’s the DIY projects page & the “Before and After” posts that really get me.

As for the plumping of my little-mama-body, there’s Tartelette… a blog that shares all sorts of recipies for devilish sweets that I dream about.  I’ve been refraining for so long, but tonight I’m going to try making the Meyer Lemon & Sour Cream Donuts because I really just can’t resist any longer (or perhaps I’ll end up buying a lousy City Markey donut because my brain cringes at the sight of the kitchen)!!

Andy Goldsworthy

My design teacher last semester (Jay Dougan) liked showing us videos of Andy’s art based from nature during our lectures.  I forgot how happy I feel when I watch his artwork evolve until I stubled upon the Playful Learning blog (which makes me wish I had a four year-old… but I only have to wait 3.5 years for that, eh?).  Not only is Andy a sculptor of nature and found objects, but a photographer and environmentalist, and his art pieces never fail to draw out the character of their environment.

Strandbeests

While we’re still talking about art, and the artists Jay [tried to] turn his classes on to, Theo Jansen and his Strandbeests stand out amoungst them all.  Theo has been working for 16 years to create sculptures that move on their own in eerily lifelike ways, his newest creatures walk without assistance on the beaches of Holland.  The wind powers the creatures’ many plastic spindly legs, each leg articulating in such a way that the bodies remain steady and level. Theo has even given them primitive logic gates that are used to reverse the animal’s direction if it senses dangerous water or loose sand where it might get stuck.  Visit TED to view the beasts in action.

Anticipating L.A., Baja, and of course, the beach!

My best girlfriend is graduating from FIDM this Saturday, so tomorrow I fly out to give her a hug and pat on the butt, and then we share the drive home together with her lover.  There are too many things that I’m excited for… dressing up for the airport, buying shoes at the fashion district, meeting her new boyfriend, visiting my brother in Venice Beach, and the 12 hour drive back to Colorado when the 2 weeks are up.  But best of all, we’re driving down the Baja Peninsula for her “graduation trip”, and camping on the beach.  Finally, I get to have a stab at winning myself a tan this summer!!

Sea of Shoes & Agent Lover

With all the built up excitement & anticipation of buying tons of new shoes for cheap in L.A., I’ve been spending tons of time gawking at Jane’s designer heels, post-after-post[-after-post].  Actually, with this awkward time between South America and L.A. and being unable to start any new design jobs, I’ve been spending a completely ridiculous amount of time on the internet.  So along with Jane’s Sea of Shoes, there’s also Agent Lover’s witty little posts of cupcakes, parties, and ensembles of rockabilly outfits that make me want to shop even more.  It’s OK.  I’m in Pagosa and there’s nowhere to shop, so I spend my pennies at the Thrift store and usually it only takes about $4 to give me my shopping fix for the day.  Oh.  And then there’s PinUpGirlClothing.com who send me mouth-watering-coupons for 20% off and all of a sudden I’m checking my credit card balance twice a day, just to make sure that money doesn’t magically appear out of nowhere…

Blue Nuns

Spanish Movies:  I’ve been filling up on my español every night or so to practice for my trip to Bolivia next month.  It’s a pretty good deal, since foriegn films are so much better anyways.  Some recent loves:  Inconscientes, Solo Con Tu Pareja & Volver

College:  Although everyone is whiney and wants the year to be over with (4 weeks!)… I’m starting to like it!  People are making conversations in class (Spring!),and everything is much more layed back.  Plus, I registered for my fall classes today, so it is officially my valentines day with school.  Next semester:  Medicinal Crops, Spanish, Art History, Soph Seminar, Indep. Media Research (Silkscreening!), & International Studies.

Skaters Coalition for Concrete:  For those who don’t know, Pagosa’s current community skate park could very-well qualify to be that of a 3rd world country’s, or worse.  So, the Skaters Coalition has been raising money through throwing some pretty cool events to build a new kick-ass park.  I’ve been helping promote the non-profit (although I don’t skateboard… what?!) for 3 years now, so it’s pretty exciting when news comes about of a new doner.  The rumor is that there’s gonna be a jib contest up at Wolf Creek to raise money for the Coalition within the next few weeks.  Shhh… this isn’t for sure yet.

AndItGoesLike:  LiveJournal is almost a thing of my past, but I still visit every-once-and-again to read certain journals (such as: Fugged) & find new music (at places like: Music Yard Sale)… credit to little miss Mary for finding the blue nun photo in this post.  If you know who’d Flickr account it came from, give me a heads-up!

And… this is so great I had to share it with you.

Glaumbaer Farm:  I wouldn’t mind living in a house covered in grass.  The whole area is pretty dope, located near the small town of Varmahlid, in western Iceland.  In Flickr’s”Explore” section, there’s a bunch of photos all tagged up:  Click here!  The credit for the photo above goes to flickr user Giulio Speranza.

Being Busy:  I’ve made a list of my prorities and pasted it above my desk.  It goes: school, artwork, work, music, health. Notice, it does not have ‘partying’ on there…. so I haven’t really been partying and it’s just lovely.  I’m going to save my time as much as possible and then waste it only on special occations.  Like, it’s Andrew’s birthday this Saturday.  I’ve also listed an unordered list of priorities to the side: Hank, family, friends, Chris, portfolio, travel, gifts, baking, photography.  Quite a nerd.

Cold Weather:  It’s been snowing and I get to bundle up in warm tights, tall boots, & long coats!  Mittens, hats, scarves, and the best thing of all:  snowboarding wear!  I did some mad rock-shredding up at Wolf Creek this weekend on about a foot of snow.  Yeeee-haw.  Actually, I only took 2 runs because I’m such a baby and my calves hurt and my board was unhappy with the pain I was putting it through.

Zooey Deschanel
I’ve never really been a fan of any female actresses until now.  She’s so quirky and I love whoever dresses her.  Zooey also recently hooked up with Mr. M. Wardand released a cute new album which I’m totally smittin on, She & Him.  Listen to a few songs at her personal MySpace (I love the song, You Really Got a Hold on Me), or check out their duo page, She & Him.

Painted Doors and Mailboxes
When Hank and I go out for walks half the time we climb the hill and look out over town… the other half we walk on the sidewalks.  I love Durango when it comes to walking sidewalks.  I love to weave in and out of alley ways, study all the victorian homes, and daydream about having my own tiny house one day.  I’m going to paint the front door green (or maybe I’ll be over pistachio green by then) and decorate my mailbox.  I’m a true dork when it comes to home-decor.

My Canon Canonet QL17 G-lll
I got a steal for this baby at the local Human Society Thrift Shop for only $20!  It’s a coupled-rangefinder, leaf-shuttered, fixed focal length 35mm camera that was first manufactured by Canon in 1972, sold new for $94.  Supposedly it’s worth about $400 today!  There are some modifications the internet has told me to make on it (including running a strip of mousepad along the inner edge of the back door to seal in the light), but it’s a rad camera and takes the coolest pictures!  It has some of the coolest little quirky functions… however, the lightmeter uses a PX625 mercury battery, which is now discontinued and although an alkaline version can be used, the different electric tension, different discharge curve, and absence of electronic compensation circuit induce a defective exposure metering.  It’s totally tolerable though.

The Polaroid Maker!!!!
This Mac Application is the coolest thing EVER.

Debbie Harry/Blondie makes me feel very empowered.  With all the homework I do, I lack any kind of social life.  Or so it seems.  I wake, I dress, I walk the dog, I eat, I go to school, I do homework, I watch an hour of some movie, and then I sleep.  Over and over.  I like repetition!  I DO!  But, I’d love to do something lazy or at least creative once in a while.  I must make a list of lovely things or I’ll get down down down…

JUST GROOVY:

  • Walking Hank
  • My French Press = The Best Coffee
  • Organizing my Clothing by Color(!)
  • Watching The Flight of the Conchords
  • Everything Begals
  • Crunching Fallen Leaves!

Anticipating my Birthday
My boyfriend says I’m having a party, but it’s only a little over 2 weeks away (on the 13th of September) and I haven’t done any planning. Either way, I’ll be 21, so it’s gotta be entertaining no matter what. Hopefully I don’t puke. That’s right, I do not want to puke on the birthday I’m supposed to want to puke.

My Bathtub
I know I like to complain about not being able to take showers, but it’s a really good excuse to relax and just think. I’ve got artwork up, music blasting, window open, and bubbles bubbles bubbles… just let me know if I can use your shower sometime.

J Shoes (!!!)
I will probably spend all my money on fancy margarita fixings before I’ll ever be able to afford some of the coolest boots (and shoes) on the market, but I can still dream! The official site wont ship to the U.S., so on to the limited selection at: Amazon.

Gala Darling’s How-to Guides
I’m not really sure why iCiNG is my favorite blog (in the world), particularly since it’s so girlie and pink and I like to think of myself as the opposite, but I love her. Here’s links to a few of my favorite entries, which touch home at the moment:
